As days go by, artificial intelligence (“AI”) continues to delve into our daily life. It is one of the reasons determining the representatives of the European Union (“EU”) to become pro-active in regulating its use, in particular in relation to AI systems. In this context, on July 12th, 2024, the long-awaited Regulation (EU) 2024/1689 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 13 June 2024 laying down harmonised rules on artificial intelligence and amending Regulations (EC) No 300/2008, (EU) No 167/2013, (EU) No 168/2013, (EU) 2018/858, (EU) 2018/1139 and (EU) 2019/2144 and Directives 2014/90/EU, (EU) 2016/797 and (EU) 2020/1828 (Artificial Intelligence Act)[1] (the “AI Act” or the “Regulation“) was published in the Official Journal of EU.
The AI Act introduces a new risk-based approach that will uniformly apply across all Member States and establishes a comprehensive framework in relation to AI systems, including high-risk AI systems, prohibited AI practices and general-purpose AI models.
Regarding the next steps, the AI Act will enter into force on August 1st, 2024, and it will be fully applicable from August 2nd, 2026 (with certain exceptions).
